Living Green in Incline Village

Conservation and recycling are things that all communities partake in to keep natural resources plentiful as well as to protect those natural resources and the environment as a whole.  Residents of Incline Village are among a fortunate few who have the beauty of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range an integral part of their daily life.  In place of skyscrapers there are mountains; in place of freeways there is the Lake.

Incline Village residents have clear blue skies to enjoy, clean air to breath and excellent water to drink, straight from the tap.  Maintaining these resources is important to Incline Village and through the Incline Village General Improvement District (IVGID), programs are in place to do just that. . .maintain and protect the natural resources.

Waste Not (Recycling) Program
"Incline Village General Improvement District's conservation program provides community conservation services to protect our resources."  Its purpose: "to empower sustainable living by providing conservation programs for recycling, household hazardous waste, water conservation, watershed management, and education."  There are many programs that are a part of the Waste Not program including water conservation, clean water team, the North Lake Tahoe "Zero Waste" project, source water protection, household hazardous waste, pine needle recycling, recycling guide and much more. Water Conservation
Lake Tahoe is the source of the drinking water for Incline Village.  Protecting the water of the lake is essential and is the responsibility of everyone. . .residents and visitors.  According to IVGID, most excessive water use is caused by over watering, irrigation leaks and timer malfunction.  Over watering provides a direct path for fertilizer, salt and other things to enter the lake, affecting the quality of the lake and drinking water.  Click here for additional information

Clean Water Team

Started in 1999, the clean water team is a volunteer citizen monitoring group funded by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection-Water Quality Bureau and IVGID Public Works Department.  Once trained, the volunteers perform water monitoring tests, collect samples and make visual observations of stream and habitat health. Curbside Recycling
The "Blue Bag" recycling program began in June 2008 and it replaced the sorting crate recycling bins used by residents for years.  Recycling bags are picked up every other week and it is easy to use.  Simply rinse off any food residue, place item in the blue bag, tie the back closed and place out on your curbside the morning of the pickup date.  Click here for the 2010 Residential Recycling Schedule.  There is no sorting of items; all accepted recycled items go into the one bag and, there is no limit to the number of recycling bags put out for collection.  Learn more

Biomass Recycling
Biomass recycling is free to Incline Village residents on a seasonal basis.  IVGID's biomass program includes the recycling of pine needles and Christmas trees.  The materials are used for erosion control projects and according to IVGID, "greatly reduces the amount of materials transported to the landfill."   Learn more
